Android TV Box Price in Nepal (2026): Which Box to Buy for an Old TV

Short answer: The Android TV box price in Nepal at Quality Computer runs from Rs 2,300 (Q96+, 2GB/16GB) to Rs 4,175 (T95, 4GB/32GB). For an old TV with HDMI, our pick is the TV98 8K with 4GB RAM and 5 GHz Wi-Fi at Rs 3,799. None of these six boxes lists Google (Play Protect) certification, so Netflix may not install, or may not play in HD.

Android TV box price in Nepal: six boxes compared

These are the six boxes on our website, cheapest first. The middle column shows only what each product name states ("ROM" in a name means storage). We haven't added chips or Android versions that the names don't promise.

Full product pages are in our shop under all Android TV boxes. One warning applies to every generic box: the same model name can hide different hardware.

AndroidPCtv lists the TV98 in both 2GB and 4GB versions, and has reported a cheap box advertising Android 13 on a chip that can't run it. Judge a box by the RAM and storage on the listing you're buying, not by the model name or the biggest number on the packaging.

Q96, TV98 or MXQ Pro: which TV box should you buy?

Two rules cover most buyers. Pay for 4GB of RAM if the box will be used every day, and make sure the name says 5G (which means 5 GHz Wi-Fi) unless you'll run a LAN cable to the TV. On paper, the six rank like this:

  1. Our pick: TV98 8K (RK3528), Rs 3,799. 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and the only box here with a named chip. Buy it for the RAM and Wi-Fi, not the 8K label (more on that below).
  2. Budget pick: Q96+ Android box, Rs 2,300. The cheapest box with 5 GHz Wi-Fi in its name. With 2GB RAM, keep it to a few apps and expect it to feel slower than the 4GB boxes.
  3. TV98 4K, Rs 3,400 (call to order). Same 4GB/32GB and 5G Wi-Fi as the 8K version for Rs 399 less. Its name doesn't state the chip, so don't assume it is the RK3528.
  4. MXQ Pro, Rs 2,800. On paper it matches the Q96+ (2GB/16GB, 4K, 5G) and costs Rs 500 more.
  5. TX3 Mini, Rs 3,000. 2GB/16GB, and the name doesn't promise 5 GHz Wi-Fi. It makes sense if you'll plug in a LAN cable; otherwise the Q96+ is cheaper.
  6. T95, Rs 4,175. 4GB/32GB like the TV98 boxes, but it costs more and its name doesn't state 5 GHz Wi-Fi or 4K. Ask us before buying if those matter to you.

How to make an old TV smart with an Android box

Hand holding a TV remote
A TV box turns the TV you already own into an app screen.

A TV box is a small Android computer for your TV. It plugs into the HDMI port, connects to the internet over Wi-Fi or a LAN cable, and gives you an Android home screen for apps such as YouTube and a web browser.

What you need

  • An HDMI port on the TV. Look for a socket labelled HDMI on the back or side.
  • Internet at the TV. Wi-Fi from your router, or a LAN cable for the steadiest connection.
  • A power socket near the TV for the box's adapter.
  • Optionally, a better remote. For typing searches and using a browser, an air mouse (a remote you point to move a cursor) or a small wireless keyboard beats arrow keys.

If your TV has no HDMI port

Very old TVs with only red, white and yellow AV sockets need a box with an AV output or a separate HDMI-to-AV converter. AV output varies by model and batch, so check the exact box first. Expect a soft picture; on a TV that old, a new smart TV is often the better spend.

There's no monthly fee for the box itself. You pay for your internet and for any subscriptions you choose.

4K, 8K and 5G: what the labels on the box mean

4K

A 4K box only shows 4K on a 4K TV. On an HD or Full HD TV, you see your TV's own resolution. For Netflix in 4K, Netflix says every device in the chain must support it, with an HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 or later and a plan that includes 4K.

8K

The TV98 8K Android box uses Rockchip's RK3528 chip: four Arm Cortex-A53 cores and a Mali-450 GPU. CNX Software's preliminary 2023 spec list had it decoding H.265 video up to 8K at 25 frames a second, and H.264 and VP9 up to 4K at 60.

But our product page for this box lists video playback and HDMI output up to 4K at 60 Hz, so expect 4K at most, even on an 8K TV. The 8K label won't make a normal TV sharper, and Netflix's highest quality is 4K.

The RK3528 also can't decode AV1, and What Hi-Fi reported in 2021 that YouTube requires AV1 support for 8K on TVs.

5G

On a TV box, 5G means 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not the 5G mobile network. The box connects to your home Wi-Fi router, not to a mobile tower. Nepali Telecom explains the mix-up well: 5G is a cellular standard, while 5 GHz is a Wi-Fi band.

5 GHz is faster and less crowded than 2.4 GHz, but its range is shorter, and 2.4 GHz passes through walls better. Your router must be dual-band to use it. If the router is two rooms away, the box may hold a steadier link on 2.4 GHz, or better still, on a LAN cable.

Will Netflix work on an Android TV box?

On a box that isn't Play Protect certified, often not properly. Two things decide it: Google certification and copy protection (DRM).

Google certification

Google says only Play Protect certified devices are eligible to include Google apps such as the Play Store. On uncertified devices, it says Google apps "aren't licensed and aren't real Google apps", may not get updates, and may not work correctly.

Netflix uses the same test. Its help page says that if your device isn't Play Protect certified, "you'll need to use a supported device to watch Netflix."

DRM and HD picture

Even where Netflix runs, quality depends on Widevine, Google's copy-protection system. Android Authority explains that HD from Netflix needs Widevine L1, and devices with only L3 are capped below HD. AndroidPCtv's write-up of the TV98 says it has no certification, so Netflix and Prime Video won't play in HD on it.

How to check any box in a minute

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Tap the profile icon at the top right, then tap Settings.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Under Play Protect certification, you'll see "Device is certified" or "Device is not certified".

Use only legal apps

In June 2025 the FBI warned that the BADBOX 2.0 botnet runs on millions of infected devices. Its warning signs include generic streaming boxes sold as "unlocked" or able to access free content, Android devices that aren't Play Protect certified, and boxes that ask you to turn off Google Play Protect.

So keep Play Protect on, avoid app stores that advertise free streaming, and use only legal apps and paid services. A box sold with "free channels" is a risk to your home network, not a bargain.

How much RAM, storage and internet speed do you need?

TV in a living room streaming a video
Streaming quality depends on your box, your Wi-Fi and your internet plan.

RAM decides how smooth the box feels, and in our range it's also what moves the Android TV box price in Nepal most: 2GB boxes cost Rs 2,300 to Rs 3,000, and 4GB boxes Rs 3,400 to Rs 4,175.

With 2GB, stick to a few apps and close the ones you're not using; 4GB gives Android more room to switch between apps. For daily family use, the extra Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,499 for a 4GB TV98 over the Q96+ is worth paying.

Storage holds apps, not films, since you stream them. 16GB is enough for a modest set of apps; 32GB leaves room to add more without deleting anything.

For internet, here is what Netflix recommends and how much data it says it uses. Other apps differ, but this is a fair guide:

Video qualitySpeed Netflix recommendsNetflix data use per hour
Standard definitionNot listedUp to 1GB
HD (720p)3 Mbps or higherUp to 3GB
Full HD (1080p)5 Mbps or higherUp to 3GB
4K Ultra HD15 Mbps or higherUp to 7GB

Speeds from Netflix-recommended internet speeds and data use from How to control how much data Netflix uses (Netflix Help Center), checked on 3 November 2026.

Check your plan against these numbers in our internet price comparison of Nepal's ISPs. If the picture buffers only at the TV, the Wi-Fi is usually the weak link: a dual-band WiFi router or a LAN cable often helps (our networking cable guide covers which one).

Smart TV box or a new smart TV?

The smart TV box price in Nepal, Rs 2,300 to Rs 4,175 with us, makes a box the cheapest way to add apps to a TV you already like. A new smart TV costs far more but gives you one remote and built-in apps.

If your TV is small, dim or has no HDMI, put the money towards a new one: our TV price in Nepal guide and Xiaomi Mi TVs in Nepal compare sizes and brands.

Google-certified streaming boxes (not sold by QC)

If Netflix in HD matters most, look at branded Google TV devices instead. Xiaomi's TV Box S (3rd Gen), which Notebookcheck reported going on sale in Europe in August 2025, runs Google TV and plays 4K with Dolby Vision and HDR10+. It has 2GB RAM, 32GB storage and 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi.

Google's own TV Streamer, which replaced the Chromecast with Google TV, is another. In March 2025, Google told Android Authority it had no plans to launch it in several markets, including India.

We don't sell either box, and we couldn't confirm an official Nepal price for them, so check who gives the warranty before you buy.

Paying for the apps themselves? Our guide to Netflix, Spotify and YouTube Premium in Nepal covers prices and how to pay.

Quick verdict: For an old TV with HDMI, buy the TV98 8K (RK3528) at Rs 3,799 for its 4GB RAM and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not for 8K. On a tight budget, the Q96+ at Rs 2,300 covers the basics. If Netflix in HD is your main reason, skip generic boxes and get a Google-certified device. Use only legal apps.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Android TV box price in Nepal?

At Quality Computer, prices run from Rs 2,300 for the Q96+ (2GB RAM, 16GB storage) to Rs 4,175 for the T95 (4GB RAM, 32GB storage). Prices were checked on 3 November 2026.

Can an Android TV box make an old TV smart?

Yes, if the TV has an HDMI port. The box adds Android apps such as YouTube and connects by Wi-Fi or a LAN cable. TVs with only AV sockets need a box with AV output or an HDMI-to-AV converter, and the picture will be softer.

Does Netflix work on a cheap Android TV box?

Often not properly. Netflix says you need a Play Protect certified device, and HD needs Widevine L1 copy protection. None of the six boxes we sell lists Google certification, so Netflix may not install or may play below HD.

What does 5G mean on an Android TV box?

It means the box supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not the 5G mobile network. Your router must be dual-band. 5 GHz is faster but has a shorter range than 2.4 GHz.

Is an 8K Android TV box worth it?

Only for its other specs. Our product page lists the TV98 8K's HDMI output at up to 4K 60Hz, so don't expect 8K on any TV. Netflix tops out at 4K, and the RK3528 chip can't decode AV1, which YouTube requires for 8K on TVs.

Do I pay monthly for an Android TV box?

No. The box is a one-time purchase. You pay only for your internet and for any subscriptions you choose, such as Netflix or a Nepali TV app.
