Office chair buying guide: fit, adjustments and type
A good office chair fits your body and your desk and lets you shift position through a long day. Check how it adjusts before you look at colour or style.
1. Get the seat height and depth right
Set the height so the whole sole of your foot rests on the floor and the back of your knee sits slightly higher than the seat. If the chair can't go low enough for your desk, use a footrest. The seat should also be short enough that its front edge doesn't touch the back of your knees (OSHA). Cornell's ergonomics guide adds that the seat should be at least an inch wider than your hips and thighs on each side (Cornell University). If you're tall or broad, sit in the chair before you buy, or ask us for the seat measurements.
2. Back support and recline
Look for lumbar support you can move up or down to fit the curve of your lower back, and a backrest that reclines at least 15 degrees from upright (OSHA). Cornell says locking the backrest in one position generally isn't recommended (Cornell University).
The names here tell you the back height. MB means medium back, as in the Featherlite AmazeMB-BL Medium Back Mesh Chair, and HB means high back. The Modulus Jazz HB also has a 4-way adjustable headrest. A mesh back lets air through, which you'll notice in a hot Terai summer.
3. Armrests and the base
Armrests should be low enough to keep your shoulders relaxed and just touch your forearms when your arms hang comfortably at your sides (OSHA). Fixed arms can't do that for everyone. The Modulus S 805-1211 Que Series has fixed arms, while the Modulus Emerald 3, Jazz-1094 and Adapt (OSC-1085) have adjustable arms. OSHA also asks for a strong five-legged base with casters that suit your floor.
4. Office chair, gaming chair or massage chair
The Modulus and Featherlite mesh chairs are built for desk work. The Fantech gaming chairs are bigger, with a high back, pillows and a deep recline. For example, Fantech lists the GC-193 with a 130 kg maximum load, recline up to 130°, a Class 3 gas lift, a steel base, 50 mm PU wheels, a head pillow, built-in lumbar support and a retractable leg rest (Fantech). PVC leather like the GC-193's wipes clean but doesn't breathe like mesh. The Fantech OC-A258 and OC-A259 sit in between, as office-style chairs from a gaming brand.
The Enliven Multifunction Massage Chair Q6 is a massage chair for relaxing at home, not a chair for working at a desk.

Office chair FAQ
What should I look for in an office chair?
Adjustable seat height, lumbar support that fits your lower back, a backrest that reclines, armrests you can set to elbow height and a five-legged base. Sit in it if you can, with your feet flat on the floor.
Is a gaming chair good for office work?
It can be, if it fits you. Gaming chairs give a high back, pillows and a deep recline, but they're bulkier, and a PVC leather seat gets warm. For long work days in a hot room, a mesh office chair is often the more comfortable choice.
What do MB and HB mean in a chair name?
MB is medium back and HB is high back. A high back supports your upper back and often your head, while a medium back stops around the shoulder blades.
Which chair brands do you sell?
Enliven, Fantech, Featherlite and Modulus. Every price on this page is our current website price.
