Keyboard buying guide: key type, size and connection

This page has plain office keyboards, keyboard and mouse combos, wireless and Bluetooth keyboards, gaming and mechanical boards, and a few replacement keyboards for laptops. Three choices narrow it down: how the keys feel, how big the board is, and how it connects.

1. Membrane or mechanical

A membrane keyboard presses a rubber dome onto a printed sheet under the keys. It's quiet, light and cheap, and plenty are built to survive a small spill: Logitech calls its K120 USB Keyboard spill-resistant (Logitech). Most everyday office keyboards are this type.

A mechanical keyboard has a separate switch under every key. It costs more and makes more noise, but each press feels the same, and CHERRY rates its MX switches for tens of millions of presses (CHERRY). The product names tell you which type you're getting: "Mechanical" on the Fantech ATOM and Rapoo V700 boards, "Membrane" on the Fantech SHIKARI K515.

2. On a mechanical board, pick the switch

Switches are usually sold by colour. CHERRY describes its red switches as linear (smooth all the way down), brown as tactile with a small bump and no click, and blue as tactile with an audible click. The click gives clear feedback when you type, but CHERRY says blue switches don't suit big offices. The 917-10 87 Keys Mechanical Keyboard has blue switches; for other models, check the switch on the product page. Force figures and hot-swap boards are covered on mechanical keyboard price in Nepal.

3. Choose a size

Full size (about 104 keys) has a number pad on the right, which helps with accounts and data entry. The K120 is one, with what Logitech calls an integrated number pad. Tenkeyless or TKL (about 87 keys) drops the number pad so the mouse sits closer to your hand, like the 917-10 87 Keys. A 75% board keeps the function row and arrows but packs them tighter, and a 60% board (about 61 keys) drops the function row, arrows and number pad and reaches them through an Fn key.

Fantech puts the key count in the name of its ATOM PRO63, which has 63 keys (Fantech). Other ATOM names look like they follow the same pattern, so the Fantech ATOM 104 MK886 V2 should be full size and the Fantech ATOM61 MK211 a 60% board; check the key count on the product page. If you like a small keyboard but enter numbers now and then, add a keypad like the Rapoo K10 23-Keys Numeric Keypad.

4. Wired, 2.4GHz wireless or Bluetooth

A wired USB keyboard needs no batteries and no setup. A wireless one either plugs a small 2.4GHz receiver into a USB port or connects over Bluetooth with no receiver, which is what a tablet or phone needs. Multi-mode keyboards do both. Rapoo's Rapoo 8050T set connects over Bluetooth or 2.4GHz, switches between connected devices with one press, and lists Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Chrome OS. It comes with two AA batteries, and Rapoo quotes up to 12 months of use (Rapoo).

Some wireless mechanical boards charge instead of taking batteries. Fantech lists the ATOM PRO63 with a 2000 mAh battery, and it works wired, on 2.4GHz or on Bluetooth 5.0.

5. Combos, Nepali keys and laptop keyboards

A keyboard and mouse combo is the simplest way to kit out a new desktop, wired like the Logitech MK120 or wireless like the Logitech MK240 Nano. If you type in Nepali, the Frontech FT-1671 (Nepali + English) has both scripts printed on the keys; you still need a Nepali input layout turned on in your computer's language settings.

The Acer Laptop Keyboard 4732 and Asus Laptop Keyboard X541N are replacement keyboards that fit inside those laptop models, so match the model number on the bottom of your laptop. To add a keyboard to any laptop without opening it, a USB or wireless keyboard plugs straight in.

Keyboard FAQ

Which keyboard is best for office work?

A full-size membrane keyboard with a number pad suits most office work. It's quiet, it doesn't cost much and it's easy to wipe clean. For a tidier desk, a wireless keyboard and mouse combo gets rid of two cables.

Is a mechanical keyboard worth it?

If you type or game for hours every day, usually yes. The keys feel the same on every press, the switches last for years, and the keycaps pull off so you can clean out dust. For light use, a membrane keyboard does the job for less.

Will a wireless keyboard work with my phone or tablet?

Only if it has Bluetooth. A keyboard that connects through a 2.4GHz USB receiver needs a USB port, so it suits PCs and laptops. Look for "Bluetooth" or "multi-mode" in the product name.

What is a TKL keyboard?

TKL means tenkeyless: a keyboard without the number pad, usually 87 keys. It leaves more room for the mouse, which is why gamers like it. If you enter a lot of numbers, get a full-size keyboard or add a separate numeric keypad.

Which keyboard brands do you sell?

Rapoo, Fantech, ViewSonic, Logitech, UGREEN, Havit, Dell, Philips, Alcatroz, Ant Esports, AOC, Corsair, Frontech, R8, Track and WiWU, plus Acer and Asus replacement laptop keyboards. Every price on this page is our current website price.
