Network switch buying guide: ports, speed and management
A network switch turns one port on your router into many wired ports. Choose it by how many devices you'll plug in, how fast they need to be, and whether you want to manage it.
1. Count the ports, then add spares
One port goes back to your router, so an 8-port switch leaves seven for devices. Count your PCs, printers, TVs, cameras and access points, then add two or three spare ports for later. This page runs from 5-port desktop switches to 24 and 28-port models for offices and racks.
2. 10/100 or gigabit
A 10/100 switch runs each port at up to 100 Mbps. The Tp-Link 8-Port Switch SF1008D is one (TP-Link). A gigabit switch runs each port at up to 1000 Mbps, like the 16-port Tp-Link 16-Port Gigabit Switch TL-SG1016 (TP-Link). Choose gigabit for PCs, a NAS, copying big files between computers, or an internet plan over 100 Mbps. 10/100 is enough for printers and most CCTV cameras.
3. Unmanaged, cloud-managed or Layer 2 managed
An unmanaged switch is plug and play, with nothing to set up. The Ruijie Reyee RG-ES108GD is one (Ruijie), and it's the right choice for most homes and small shops.
Ruijie's cloud-managed models, such as the RG-ES205GC-P, let you set VLANs and check the switch's statistics from the Ruijie Cloud app (Ruijie). The Layer 2 managed RG-NBS3100-24GT4SFP-P-V2 adds link aggregation, IGMP snooping, port isolation and storm control for bigger networks (Ruijie).
4. Desktop, metal or rack-mount
A plastic desktop switch like the Ruijie Reyee RG-ES05G suits a home desk. Metal cases are tougher, and the RG-ES108GD is fanless, so it runs quietly (Ruijie). The TP-Link TL-SG1016 comes in a 19-inch rack-mountable steel case and is fanless too (TP-Link), so it fits a network rack. Wherever it goes, leave some air around it, especially through a Terai summer.
5. SFP ports for fiber links
An SFP port takes a small fiber module, for runs too long for copper cable, such as between buildings. The RG-NBS3100-24GT4SFP-P-V2 has four 1GE SFP ports next to its 24 copper ports (Ruijie). The Digicom SFP 1.25G module's name gives 1310/1550nm, 20 km and an SC connector, and it needs a compatible module at the other end of the fiber.
6. PoE for cameras and access points
IP cameras, ceiling access points and IP phones can take their power from the switch over the same network cable. Power budgets, PoE+ and CCTV tips are on PoE switch price in Nepal.

Network switch FAQ
What is the difference between a switch and a router?
A router connects your home or office to the internet and gives each device an address. A switch adds more wired ports to that network. Most people plug a switch into a spare LAN port on the router.
Will a switch make my internet faster?
No. It adds ports, not speed. A gigabit switch does make copying files between computers on the same network faster.
Do I need a gigabit switch?
Yes, if you'll plug in PCs or a NAS, or your plan is faster than 100 Mbps. A shop that only connects a printer and a few cameras can manage with 10/100.
Should I buy a managed or unmanaged switch?
Unmanaged for a home or small shop. Choose a cloud-managed or Layer 2 managed model if you need VLANs, remote monitoring, or you're running many cameras and access points.
How far can a network cable run from the switch?
The Ethernet standard allows 100 m for one copper run. Past that, add another switch along the way, or link the two ends with fiber through SFP ports.
Which network switch brands do you sell?
BDCOM, Digicom, D-Link, Hikvision, Netis, Ruijie Reyee, Secureye, Totolink, TP-Link and Trendnet. Every price on this page is our current website price.
