Memory card buying guide: card type, speed class and what your device needs

Start with what the memory card is for. A phone, a 4K camera and a CCTV camera each need something different from an SD card, and the small symbols printed on the card tell you which jobs it can do.

1. microSD or full-size SD

Phones, action cameras, CCTV cameras, dash cams and drones take microSD cards. Many DSLR and mirrorless cameras take full-size SD cards, like the SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC and the SanDisk Ultra SDXC 128GB on this page. Some microSD cards here, such as the Kingston Canvas Select Plus and the SanDisk Extreme Pro microSDXC, are listed with an adapter for full-size SD slots.

2. Read the speed symbols

The speed symbols on a card show its minimum write speed, which is what matters when a device records video (SD Association). Class 10, U1 and V10 mean at least 10MB/s, and U3 and V30 mean at least 30MB/s (SD Association). The SD Association says a 4K camera can use a U3 or V30 card or faster, and that high frame rates may need a faster card still (SD Association), so check what your camera's manual asks for.

Ratings can change with size, too. Kingston rates the Canvas Select Plus U1 and V10 at 64GB and 128GB, but U3 and V30 at 256GB and 512GB (Kingston), so check the symbols on the exact card you buy.

The big "up to" number on the pack is usually the read speed. SanDisk, for example, notes that its write speeds are lower and that speeds beyond UHS-I's 104MB/s need a compatible device (SanDisk). Its Extreme Pro SD card reads at up to 200MB/s but writes at up to 90MB/s in the 64GB and 128GB sizes (SanDisk).

3. A1 and A2 for phones

If you'll install apps on the card or use it as extra phone storage, look for A1 or A2. These classes rate random reads and writes per second (IOPS), which is how apps use a card. The SD Association sets A1 at a minimum of 1,500 random reads and 500 random writes per second (SD Association). A2 is the higher class, but its speed only comes with an A2 card in a phone that supports A2; mix A1 and A2 and you get at least A1 (SD Association).

The SanDisk Ultra microSDXC 128GB is rated A1 (SanDisk). For other cards, look for the A1 or A2 mark on the card or in its name. Check that your phone has a card slot first, since many newer phones don't.

4. Capacity: SDHC and SDXC

Cards from over 2GB up to 32GB are SDHC and use FAT32. Cards over 32GB, up to 2TB, are SDXC and use exFAT (SD Association). Most cards on this page are SDXC, as their names say. The SD Association lists SDXC cards for SDXC and SDUC devices, not older SDHC ones (SD Association), so look up the largest card your camera or dash cam takes in its manual.

A 128GB card shows about 119GB in a phone or PC. That's a different way of counting the same space, not missing storage.

5. CCTV cameras and dash cams

A CCTV camera or dash cam records nonstop and, once the card is full, records over the old footage. The SD Association explains that a card can only be rewritten so many times, which it calls endurance, and that a bigger card means longer recording with less rewriting. Card makers sell higher endurance lines for this work. For a dash cam, the SD Association advises replacing the card when the camera shows a read or write error, and every one or two years depending on the card's endurance (SD Association).

The card size sets how many days a camera keeps. A camera recording at 2 Mbps, for example, writes about 21.6GB a day, so a 64GB card holds about 3 days, 128GB about 6 days and 256GB about 12 days. A higher bitrate setting fills it sooner. See CCTV camera price in Nepal and dash camera price in Nepal.

Memory card FAQ

Which memory card is best for my phone?

A brand-name microSD card rated A1 or A2, in 128GB or 256GB for most people. Check that your phone has a card slot and the largest size it takes. A2 only helps if the phone supports it.

Which memory card should I use for CCTV or a dash cam?

One sold for continuous recording, often called a high endurance card, in a size the camera supports. Nonstop recording wears any card out over time, so replace it if the camera starts reporting card errors. For 4K recording, also look for U3 or V30.

What does V30 or U3 mean on a memory card?

Both mean the card keeps writing at 30MB/s or more. That's the level the SD Association points to for 4K cameras, though some high frame rates need faster cards. The 10MB/s level is marked Class 10, U1 or V10.

What is the difference between A1 and A2?

A2 is the faster of the two for running apps, with higher minimums for random reads and writes than A1's 1,500 and 500 per second. The extra speed only shows in a phone that supports A2.

Which memory card brands do you sell?

SanDisk, Lexar, Kingston and Dahua. Every price on this page is our current website price.
