DVR buying guide: channels, camera types and hard disk
A DVR (digital video recorder) records analog HD cameras that run on coaxial cable, such as Hikvision's Turbo HD range. Pick it by how many cameras you have, what kind they are, and how many days of footage you want to keep.
1. Match the DVR to your cameras
The Hikvision DS-7104HQHI-K1 takes 4 analog cameras and the iDS-7208HQHI-M1/S takes 8. Both accept HDTVI, AHD, HDCVI and CVBS cameras, so either can take over an older coax system (Hikvision, Hikvision). Each also records a couple of IP cameras: 2 by default on both, expandable to 6 on the DS-7104HQHI-K1 and to 10 on the iDS-7208HQHI-M1/S.
Check the resolution too. Hikvision lists the DS-7104HQHI-K1 at up to 4 MP Lite (15 fps) (Hikvision) and the iDS-7208HQHI-M1/S at 1080p on every channel (Hikvision), so both suit 2MP (1080p) cameras; for 5MP or 8MP cameras, check the spec sheet first. The iDS-7208HQHI-M1/S is an AcuSense model. Hikvision says its motion detection sorts people and vehicles from other movement on all analog channels (Hikvision), which should mean fewer phone alerts set off by leaves, rain or animals.
The Hikvision DS-7104NI-Q1/M on this page is a 4-channel NVR, which records IP cameras rather than analog ones. See NVR price in Nepal.
2. Hard disk and recording time
Each DVR here has one SATA bay, for a disk of up to 6 TB on the DS-7104HQHI-K1 (Hikvision) and up to 10 TB on the iDS-7208HQHI-M1/S (Hikvision). Both record in H.265 Pro+, which Hikvision says improves encoding efficiency and lowers storage costs, so a disk lasts longer than it would on an older H.264 DVR. As an example, eight cameras at 2 Mbps each write about 173 GB a day, so a 4TB disk keeps about 23 days and a 10TB disk about 58. Use a surveillance hard disk; see internal hard disk price in Nepal. To keep recording through a power cut, run the DVR and the camera power supply from a UPS.

DVR FAQ
What is the difference between a DVR and an NVR?
A DVR takes analog HD cameras on coaxial cable, and those cameras usually take 12V power from an adapter or a power supply box. An NVR takes IP cameras on network cable. The Hikvision DVRs here can add a few IP cameras as well, but a system that's mostly IP needs an NVR.
Can I use my old CCTV cameras with a new DVR?
Usually, yes. Both DVRs here accept HDTVI, AHD, HDCVI and CVBS, the main analog formats, so older coax cameras normally connect. The picture will only be as sharp as the old camera, though.
How long does a DVR keep recordings?
Until the disk is full, and then it normally records over the oldest footage. Eight cameras at 2 Mbps fill about 173 GB a day, so a 4TB disk holds about 23 days. Fewer cameras, a lower bitrate or motion-only recording make it last longer.
