External Hard Disk Price in Nepal

External hard disk buying guide: type, size, USB and format

An external hard disk (or external hard drive) is the cheapest way to back up a laptop, years of phone photos or an office PC. Choose the type first, then the capacity, then make sure it will work with your computer or TV.

1. Portable or desktop

A portable external hard disk holds a 2.5-inch disk and runs from the USB port alone, so one cable does everything. A desktop external drive holds a bigger 3.5-inch disk and needs its own power adapter, so it stays on a desk. If you're not sure which type a model is, check its product page or call us.

Every hard disk has moving parts, and a knock or a fall while it's running can damage it. Eject it before you unplug it, carry it in a padded case, and keep a second copy of anything you can't lose.

2. Pick the capacity

Add up what you want to back up, then leave room to grow. A laptop with a 512GB drive plus a phone's photos fits on 1TB with space left. For several computers, video work or years of family photos, go for 2TB or 4TB. The hard disks here run from 1TB to 8TB.

A new drive shows a little less than the box says: Windows reports a 1TB disk as about 931GB, since the box counts in thousands and Windows in 1,024s.

3. USB version and cable

USB 3.2 Gen 1 runs at 5Gbps and USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10Gbps, and the USB 3.2 standard took in all the earlier 3.x versions (USB-IF). So a drive sold as USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 Gen 1 has the same 5Gbps speed as one sold as USB 3.2 Gen 1. A hard disk can't use all of 5Gbps anyway, so any USB 3 hard disk is quick enough for backups. Faster ports matter more on a portable SSD.

Plug a USB 3 drive into an older USB 2.0 port and it still works at USB 2.0 speed, because USB drops to the speed of the slower end (USB-IF). Many portable hard disks use a wide USB 3.0 Micro-B cable, which is not the same as the micro-USB cable from an older phone, so keep the one from the box.

4. Format it for Windows, Mac or TV

The format decides which devices can use the drive. NTFS is the Windows format; a Mac can read an NTFS drive but can't save to it without extra software. exFAT works on both, and Apple lists it as the Windows-compatible format for drives over 32GB (Apple). FAT32 works on the widest range of devices, including many TVs and car stereos, but Microsoft gives its file size limit as 4GB (Microsoft), so one big movie file can be too large for it.

To play movies on a TV, check the TV manual for the formats its USB port reads. Formatting erases everything on the drive, so do it before you copy your files, not after.

5. Hard disk, portable SSD or drive case

A portable SSD costs more per TB, but it's much faster and has no moving parts. This page has two from Transcend, the Transcend 500GB Portable SSD (ESD270C) and the Transcend ESD310 1TB. For more portable SSDs, see external SSD price in Nepal.

If you have an old internal hard disk lying around, the Carbon CR-201 5Gbps External HDD Case turns it into an external drive. Check that it takes your disk's size, 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch, before you buy.

External hard disk FAQ

Will an external hard disk work on both Windows and Mac?

Yes, if it's formatted exFAT, which both can read and write. A drive formatted NTFS for Windows can be read on a Mac but not written to without extra software. Reformatting erases the drive, so do it before you fill it.

Can I watch movies from an external hard disk on my TV?

Yes, if the TV's USB port reads the drive's format; the TV manual lists them. If a TV only reads FAT32, files over 4GB won't copy to the drive, so big movie files need exFAT or NTFS on a TV that supports them.

Will an external hard disk work in an old USB 2.0 port?

It should, at USB 2.0 speed, so a big backup takes a lot longer. Use a USB 3 port whenever the computer has one.

Should I buy an external hard disk or a portable SSD?

A hard disk gives you the most space for the money, which suits backups. A portable SSD is faster, lighter and has no moving parts, which suits carrying work around or editing video straight from the drive.

Which external hard disk brands do you sell?

Transcend, WD, Toshiba and Adata, plus a Carbon drive case. Every price on this page is our current website price.

Do you deliver external hard disks outside Birtamode?

Yes. We usually deliver all over Nepal in 2 to 5 days, and delivery is free within 15 km on products over Rs 5,000.
