All-in-one PC buying guide: screen, processor, upgrades and power
An all-in-one PC puts the computer inside the monitor. You get a tidy desk and one power cable, and you give up some room to upgrade. 1. Know the trade-off
An all-in-one takes the space of a monitor, often with the webcam built in. The Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 24IRH9 i5, for example, has a 5MP camera with a shutter you can close (Lenovo).
The cost is upgrades and repairs. There's no slot for a graphics card, and if the screen or another part fails, the whole unit goes in for repair. If you want to add a graphics card later or keep using your old monitor, a tower suits you better.
2. Pick the screen
Screens here run from 15.6 inches on the MSI Pro 16T and 21.5 inches on the MSI Pro 22XT and Dell All In One 3280, to 23.8 inches on the Lenovo models and 24 inches on the Apple iMac with its Retina 4.5K display. On the Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 24IRH9, the 23.8-inch panel is Full HD IPS at 100Hz (Lenovo).
Touch matters for some jobs. The MSI Pro 22XT has 10-point touch that works like a phone screen (MSI). MSI lists a resistive single-touch panel for the Pro 16T 10M (MSI), fine for pressing on-screen buttons but not for pinch or swipe gestures. Lenovo makes the IdeaCentre AIO 24IRH9 and AIO 3 24IAP7 in touch and non-touch versions (Lenovo), so ask us which version you're getting.
3. Choose the processor and memory
For billing, browsing and office work, the Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO A100 runs an Intel N100, a 4-core chip with a 6 W TDP (Intel), and the MSI Pro 16T runs an Intel Celeron. For heavier multitasking, the Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 24IRH9 comes with a Core i5-13420H or i7-13620H and 16GB of RAM. Those are laptop chips: Intel uses the H suffix for its highest-performance laptop processors (Intel), and the i5-13420H has 8 cores and a 45 W base power (Intel). The iMac uses Apple's M3 chip and runs macOS, not Windows.
The Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 24IRH9, Lenovo AIO 3 24IAP7 and MSI Pro 22XT take laptop-size SO-DIMM memory, not desktop sticks. The 24IRH9 has two DDR5 slots for up to 24GB and the AIO 3 two DDR4 slots for up to 16GB (Lenovo, Lenovo), and the Pro 22XT takes up to 32GB (MSI). See laptop RAM price in Nepal. On the iMac, Apple sets the memory and storage when the machine is built (Apple), so buy the size you need.
4. Plan for power cuts
An all-in-one switches off when the power goes, just like any desktop. Because the screen is inside, the power adapter's rating gives a rough ceiling for the whole machine when you size a UPS. MSI rates the Pro 22XT adapter at 120 W, and Lenovo uses a 90 W or 135 W adapter on the IdeaCentre AIO 24IRH9 (MSI, Lenovo). A small computer UPS covers that; check its watt rating as well as the VA. Is an all-in-one PC better than a desktop tower?
It's neater and saves desk space, with the screen and often a webcam built in. A tower is easier to upgrade and repair, and you can add a graphics card. For a reception desk, home office or shop counter, an all-in-one is a good fit.
Can I upgrade the RAM or SSD in an all-in-one?
On many Windows models, yes. The Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 24IRH9 has two SO-DIMM memory slots for up to 24GB and takes an M.2 SSD of up to 1TB (Lenovo). On the iMac, memory and storage are fixed when you buy it.
Does an all-in-one need a UPS?
If power cuts are common where you are, yes. It shuts off when the power goes, the same as a tower. The Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 24IRH9 uses a 90 W or 135 W adapter, well within what a small computer UPS can carry.
