CCTV camera buying guide: Wi-Fi or wired, where they go, and recording
Start with how many places you need to watch. One or two rooms is a job for a Wi-Fi camera. A house, shop or office that needs four or more cameras is usually better served by a wired system with a recorder.
1. Wi-Fi camera or wired system
Wi-Fi cameras such as the EZVIZ H6C and the EZVIZ C6N join your home Wi-Fi, can record to a microSD card inside the camera, and show live video in the EZVIZ phone app. They're quick to set up, but each one needs a power socket nearby and a strong Wi-Fi signal where it's mounted. A wired system runs a cable from each camera to one recorder, a DVR or an NVR, which saves everything to a hard disk. It takes more work to install, but one recorder handles 4 to 16 cameras or more, and it doesn't depend on your Wi-Fi. The wired cameras here are either analog HD (Turbo HD) or IP. 2. Count the cameras and plan where each one goes
Walk round the building and list the places you'd want on a recording: gates and doors, the counter or cash desk, the parking, and any side or back entry. A house often ends up with four cameras: gate, front door, back and parking. A small shop often needs three or four: the entrance, the counter, the stock room and the front outside.
Then match the camera to the spot. A dome or turret suits ceilings, verandas and the inside of a shop, where it looks tidy and is hard to knock out of line. 3. Picture quality and night vision
2MP (1080p) is the usual choice and shows enough for most rooms and gates. Go to 4MP or more where you need to recognise faces or read a number plate from further back. A 2.8 mm lens sees wide and close. A 4 mm or 6 mm lens sees a narrower area in more detail, so it suits a long driveway.
At night most cameras switch to black-and-white infrared. Colour night vision models, such as Hikvision's ColorVu range and the Secureye 2MP Color Night Vision Gladiator, keep the picture in colour, which makes clothes and vehicles easier to tell apart. Hikvision's ColorVu DS-2CE10DFT-F, for example, does it with a wide F1.0 lens and a white light (Hikvision).
4. Weather, heat and power cuts
Outdoor cameras have to keep out dust and rain, so look for IP66 or IP67 on the spec sheet. IP67 means dust-tight and able to survive a short dunk in water. Indoor Wi-Fi cameras belong under a roof. Hikvision rates its 2MP Turbo HD mini bullet for -40°C to 60°C (Hikvision), but a camera in full afternoon sun gets hotter than the air around it, so some shade helps in a Terai summer.

5. Recording and watching from your phone
A Wi-Fi camera keeps its footage on a microSD card, so buy a card rated for video, such as V30, with it. See microSD card price in Nepal. To watch from your phone, EZVIZ cameras use the EZVIZ app and Hikvision recorders use the Hik-Connect app (Hikvision). The camera or recorder needs an internet connection for that, but a wired recorder keeps recording to its hard disk when the internet drops.

How many CCTV cameras do I need?
Count the gates, doors and blind spots you'd want on a recording. Many houses need about four (gate, front door, back and parking) and a small shop three or four. Choose a recorder with a few spare channels so you can add more later.
Should I buy a Wi-Fi camera or a wired CCTV system?
A Wi-Fi camera is simplest for one or two rooms and records to a microSD card. For four or more cameras, or outdoor spots far from the router, a wired system with a DVR or NVR is more dependable and keeps all the footage on one hard disk.
Does CCTV work without internet?
Yes. A wired system records to the hard disk in its DVR or NVR with or without internet. You only need internet to watch the cameras on your phone when you're away.
Will my CCTV keep recording in a power cut?
Only if it has power. A UPS on the recorder, the PoE switch and the camera power supply keeps the system recording through a cut. Without one, recording stops until the power comes back.
