Gaming headphone buying guide: connections, surround and the mic
A gaming headset has to plug into whatever you play on, keep up with the game and carry your voice to your team. For Bluetooth, noise-cancelling and office headphones, see headphones.
1. Match the plug to your PC, PS5 or phone
Fantech says USB headsets work on a PS5 when you plug them into the front USB port. A headset with one four-pole 3.5mm plug (TRRS) works through the PS5 controller. A headset with two 3.5mm plugs, one for sound and one for the mic, needs a Y adapter on a controller, or the mic won't work. The PS5 doesn't support Bluetooth audio, so a Bluetooth-only headset needs a USB Bluetooth adapter there (Fantech).
For one headset across everything, a single-plug model is the easy choice. The Fantech ALTO MH91 has a TRRS plug with a splitter in the box, and Fantech lists it for PC, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and mobile (Fantech).
2. Wired, wireless receiver or Bluetooth
Wired is the simplest: nothing to charge and no delay. Wireless gaming headsets usually come with a small USB receiver. The Fantech TAMAGO WHG01 has a USB wireless receiver, Bluetooth 5.2 for your phone and a USB-C cable for wired play (Fantech).
Bluetooth audio lags a little behind the picture, so for games use the receiver or a cable and keep Bluetooth for music and calls. Other multi-mode headsets here include the Fantech Harmony WHG02, the Rapoo VH800 dual-mode and the Armaggeddon Orion 7 with quad-mode connection.
3. Virtual 7.1 and the mic
7.1 surround on a headset is virtual. There are still two drivers, one for each ear, and the surround effect is processed. The Fantech ALTO HG26 lists virtual 7.1 with 50mm drivers and connects by USB (Fantech). How much it helps depends on the game, so try it both on and off.
For the mic, a boom you can bend towards your mouth works best, and a detachable one is handy if you also wear the headset outside. The ALTO HG26 and MH91 both have detachable omnidirectional mics with noise cancellation. Omnidirectional mics pick up sound from all around, so keep the boom close to your mouth in a noisy room.

Will a gaming headset work on PS5?
Yes, in most cases. Fantech says USB headsets work in the PS5's USB port and single-plug 3.5mm headsets work in the controller. Two-plug headsets need a Y adapter for the mic, and Bluetooth headsets need a USB Bluetooth adapter, since the PS5 has no Bluetooth audio.
Is 7.1 surround sound real on a gaming headset?
It's virtual. The headset still has two drivers, and the 7.1 effect is processed to sound like it comes from around you. It can help with direction in some games, but it isn't the same as a room full of speakers.
Can I use a gaming headset with my phone?
Yes, if it has Bluetooth, or a single 3.5mm plug and your phone has a headphone jack. Fantech lists the ALTO MH91 for mobile. A USB-A headset won't plug into a phone.
