Inverter battery buying guide: type, size and care
Choose an inverter battery on three things: the type, the size in Ah for the hours you want, and how much looking after you can give it.
1. Tall tubular or sealed SMF
Tall tubular batteries are the usual choice for a home inverter that runs through long, regular power cuts. Livguard puts the average life of a tubular inverter battery at 5 to 6 years, against 3 to 4 years for a flat plate (flat grid) one (Livguard). They need distilled water topped up now and then. Our tall tubular batteries come from Asian, Livfast and Su-Kam, from 100Ah to 230Ah.
SMF (sealed maintenance-free) batteries never need water. Exide gives its EP SMF range 3 to 5 years in standby use and lists uses such as UPS systems, telecom and security systems (Exide). They suit a spot where checking water is hard.

2. Pick the Ah for the hours you need
Bigger Ah means longer backup on the same load. The guide on inverter price in Nepal shows how to add up your load. For a rough figure in hours, multiply the battery's Ah by 12V and by a cautious 80%, then divide by the watts, following the method Genus describes.
On that guide's 375 W example (three fans, eight LED bulbs, a router and a TV), a 100Ah battery lasts about 2.6 hours, a 150Ah about 3.8 hours and a 200Ah about 5.1 hours. Treat these as rough figures. Ah ratings depend on how fast the battery is drained: Exide's EP 100-12 SMF gives 100Ah over 20 hours but 91Ah over 10 hours (Exide). So expect less at heavy loads, and less again as a battery ages.
3. One battery or two
Every battery on this page is 12V. A 12V inverter takes one, and a 24V inverter takes two of the same model (Luminous). Buy the pair together, so both are the same size and age. The inverter guide lists which of our inverters are 12V, 24V or 48V.
4. Read the warranty in the name
Where a product name has months in it, that's the battery's warranty. For example, the Asian batteries say 36+12 Months, the Su-Kam Sumo 165AH and 220AH say 36+24, and the Livfast Maxximo MXTT 1854 says 54 months (36+18M). Ask us what each part of the warranty covers before you buy.
5. Look after it
Check the water level in a tubular battery about every two months and top up with distilled water only, never tap water (Livguard). Fill to the marked line and don't overfill. Keep the battery upright in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from direct sun and heat (Luminous).
Heat matters in a Terai summer. Schneider Electric says lead-acid batteries do best at 20 to 25°C, and as a rule of thumb every 8°C above that halves their life (Schneider Electric).

What Ah battery do I need?
It depends on your load and how long the cuts last. On a 375 W load (fans, lights, a router and a TV), a 150Ah battery gives about 3.8 hours and a 200Ah about 5.1 hours, using Ah × 12V × 0.8 ÷ watts.
How often should I add water to an inverter battery?
Check a tubular battery about every two months and top up with distilled water to the marked line. SMF batteries, like the Exide Powersafe, never need water.
