Server buying guide: tower or rack, and what's inside
The two Lenovo ThinkSystem servers on this page sit at opposite ends: the ST50 is a single-processor tower for a small office, and the SR650 V3 is a two-processor rack server for heavy workloads. The choice comes down to where it will live and how much work it has to do.
1. Tower or rack
A tower server stands on the floor or a desk like a large desktop PC, and needs no cabinet. Lenovo builds the Lenovo ThinkSystem ST50 (7Y48S04R00) as a 4U tower, and a conversion kit can turn it into a rack server later (Lenovo).
A rack server bolts into a server cabinet alongside switches and a UPS. The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR650 V3 is a 2U rack server (Lenovo Press). A rack server also needs a cabinet deep enough for it, so compare the depth of a rack such as the MultyByte 6U Folding Rack with the server's spec sheet before you pair them.
2. Processor, memory, drives and RAID
ST50: this one has an Intel Xeon E-2104G with 4 cores and 4 threads at 3.20 GHz, which supports ECC memory (Intel), with 8GB of memory and a 1TB drive. Lenovo gives the ST50 four memory slots for up to 128GB, three 3.5-inch drive bays plus a bay for an optical or tape drive, and one power supply that isn't redundant. It lists RAID 0, 1 and 5 for this server, with RAID adapters among the options (Lenovo), so ask us what's fitted in this model. It suits file sharing, backups and an accounting database for a few users.
SR650 V3: the listing has two Intel Xeon Gold 6548Y+ processors (32 cores each, as the name says), 256GB of DDR5 memory as 4 × 64GB, three 1.92TB NVMe SSDs, a RAID 940-8i with 8GB of cache, a four-port 10GBASE-T network card and two 1100W power supplies. Lenovo's spec sheet gives it 32 memory slots for up to 8TB, room for up to 40 2.5-inch or 20 3.5-inch hot-swap drives, and up to two hot-swap power supplies. Its 940 RAID adapters work with NVMe drives as well as SAS and SATA (Lenovo Press). With 4 of 32 memory slots used, there's plenty of room to grow, and it's built for running many virtual machines or a busy database.

Should I buy a tower or a rack server?
A tower if it's your only server and you don't have a cabinet; it can sit under a desk. A rack server if you have, or are planning, a server cabinet with switches and a UPS in it.
Do I need a server or a NAS?
If you only need shared files and backups, a NAS is simpler to run. A server also runs software for the whole office, such as an accounting database, email or virtual machines, and takes ECC memory and RAID for that kind of work.
