AC buying guide: tonnage, inverter, efficiency and voltage
An AC that suits the room cools it faster and costs less to run. Get the tonnage right first, then decide on inverter or fixed speed, and check the efficiency and voltage figures on the spec sheet.
1. Match the tonnage to the room
AC capacity is given in tons or BTU. One ton is 12,000 BTU per hour, which is why the TATA Vertis 1 Ton is also labelled 12000 BTU.
Makers' charts are a starting point, and they don't all agree. Blue Star suggests up to 1.2 ton for a room of up to 110 sq ft, 1.3 to 1.7 ton for 111 to 150 sq ft, and 1.8 ton or more for 151 to 200 sq ft. It also says the chart is only indicative: big windows, an east or west facing wall, the floor the room is on, the number of people and other heat-giving gadgets all push the size up (Blue Star). Daikin's figures are more generous, with a 1 ton AC for up to 120 to 140 sq ft and a 2 ton for up to 300 to 350 sq ft (Daikin).
For example, a 12 by 12 ft bedroom is 144 sq ft. That's just past a 1 ton on Daikin's figures and a 1.5 ton room on Blue Star's chart. If it gets the afternoon sun or sits right under the roof, take the 1.5 ton. 2. Inverter or fixed speed
A fixed-speed AC runs its compressor at full power and switches it off and on to hold the temperature. An inverter AC changes the compressor's speed instead. Blue Star's example is a 1.5 ton inverter that can run anywhere between 1 and 1.75 ton, and it says the inverter type saves up to 30% more power (Blue Star).
You can see this on a spec sheet. The Chigo 1 Ton Inverter CS-35V3G-NP lists a cooling power input of 1090 W, with a range of 450 to 1400 W. Eight hours at 1090 W comes to about 8.7 units of electricity. Once the room is cool, an inverter runs nearer the bottom of its range, so a full night usually uses less than that. A fixed-speed AC costs less to buy and makes sense for a room you cool for an hour or two. For long daily use, the inverter's savings add up. Look for "Inverter" in the product name, and if a name doesn't say, ask us.
3. Compare efficiency the way the maker states it
ACs made for India carry a BEE star label from 1 to 5, based on the ISEER figure (Blue Star). Chigo states SEER and SCOP with an energy class instead: the CS-35V3G-NP lists SEER 6.1 and SCOP 4.0, rated A++ for cooling and A+ for heating. A higher SEER means less electricity for the same cooling over a season. The two systems aren't worked out the same way, so compare SEER with SEER and stars with stars.
4. Check the voltage range, and plan for a stabilizer
Blue Star says an AC compressor works between 190 and 240V, and recommends a stabilizer because the supply in many areas drops below 190V (Blue Star). Spec sheets give each model's range. The Chigo CS-35V3G-NP lists a 220 to 240V supply, and the TATA Vertis 1 Ton lists 207 to 253V. If the voltage at your house often falls outside the AC's range, budget for a stabilizer sized for it. 5. Look at the condenser, heating and what the listing covers
The outdoor unit holds the condenser. Panasonic says a copper tube condenser gives better heat transfer, and a blue fin coating protects it against corrosion (Panasonic). Not every listing here states the condenser material, so ask us if it matters to you.
Many split ACs also heat, which helps on cold winter mornings. Check the heating capacity on the product page: the TATA Vertis 1 Ton lists 12,500 BTU of heating. Most names on this page say "Indoor Unit", and a split AC works as a pair with its outdoor unit. 6. Installation and upkeep
A split AC has to be put in by a professional installer, the outdoor unit needs clear space around it, and the condensed water needs a proper drain (Blue Star). Ask the installer about pipe length and wall work before the day. After that, Blue Star recommends cleaning the filter every 15 days in normal use and a service every 3 to 4 months, and says a dirty filter can raise power use by 10%. In dusty months, clean it more often.

What size AC do I need for my room?
Work out the floor area in square feet and check it against a maker's chart. A 10 by 10 ft room usually needs about 1 ton, and a 12 by 12 ft room 1 to 1.5 ton. Go a size up if the room gets strong sun, sits under the roof or holds several people.
Is an inverter AC worth the extra cost?
If you run the AC for several hours a day, usually yes. An inverter slows its compressor down once the room is cool instead of stopping and starting, and Blue Star puts the saving at up to 30%. For a room cooled now and then, a fixed-speed AC is the cheaper buy.
How much electricity does an AC use?
Look at the cooling power input on the spec sheet. The Chigo 1 Ton Inverter CS-35V3G-NP lists 1090 W, so 8 hours at that level is about 8.7 units. An inverter uses less once the room has cooled down.
Do I need a stabilizer for my AC?
You need one if your voltage falls outside the AC's working range, which is on its spec sheet. If your voltage often drops below about 190V, get a stabilizer rated for the AC's tonnage. An electrician can measure it for you.
