iPhone 15 series buying guide: size, Pro features and storage
All four iPhone 15 models have the Dynamic Island, a 48MP main camera and a USB-C port. What separates them is screen size, the Pro extras and how much storage you need.
1. Choose the size: 6.1-inch or 6.7-inch
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro have 6.1-inch screens. The iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max are 6.7-inch.
The bigger two last longer. Apple rates video playback at up to 20 hours on the iPhone 15, 23 on the 15 Pro, 26 on the 15 Plus and 29 on the 15 Pro Max (Apple tech specs: 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max). They also weigh more: 201 g for the 15 Plus and 221 g for the 15 Pro Max, against 171 g for the iPhone 15 and 187 g for the 15 Pro. If you mostly use your phone with one hand, the 6.1-inch models are easier to hold.
2. Decide whether you need a Pro
The 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max add a titanium frame, the A17 Pro chip and an Action button in place of the ring/silent switch (Apple). Their screens refresh at up to 120Hz for smoother scrolling and have an Always-On mode. Their USB-C port runs at USB 3 speeds, up to 10Gb/s with a USB 3 cable, where the 15 and 15 Plus are limited to USB 2. That matters if you copy long videos to a computer.
The Pro models are also the only iPhone 15s that support Apple Intelligence (Apple). For calls, chat apps, social media and photos, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are plenty. Their A16 Bionic is the same chip Apple used in the iPhone 14 Pro (Apple).
3. Compare the cameras
Every iPhone 15 has a 48MP main camera and a 12MP ultra wide. On the 15 and 15 Plus, the 2x zoom comes from the main camera's sensor. The 15 Pro adds a 3x telephoto lens, and the 15 Pro Max has a 5x telephoto at 120 mm, the longest zoom Apple had put on an iPhone when it launched (Apple). Both Pro models can also record ProRes and Log video, which give you more room when editing.
For family photos and social media, the standard models do well. If you shoot events, sport or a lot of video, the longer zoom is the reason to pay more.
4. Pick the storage
The iPhone 15, 15 Plus and 15 Pro come in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB, and the 15 Pro also in 1TB. The 15 Pro Max starts at 256GB and goes up to 1TB. There's no memory card slot, so you can't add storage later.
128GB is enough for most people who back up photos to iCloud or Google Photos. If you shoot a lot of 4K video or keep everything on the phone, go for 256GB or more.
