Processor buying guide: socket, graphics, cores and cooling
Choose the processor and the motherboard together. The socket decides what fits, built-in graphics decide whether you also need a graphics card, and the number of cores decides how much work the PC can take.
1. Start with the socket
Every processor fits one socket, and the motherboard must have the same one. The Ryzen 5 5600X uses AM4 (AMD). The older Ryzen 5 3600 does too: MSI's A520M-A PRO, an AM4 board, lists support for both Ryzen 3000 and 5000 chips (MSI). The Ryzen 5 8500G (AMD) and Ryzen 9 9950X (AMD) use the newer AM5 socket.
Intel's 12th gen chips, such as the Core i5-12400 and i7-12700, use LGA1700 (Intel). Core Ultra 200S desktop chips, such as the Core Ultra 7 265K and Core Ultra 9 285K, use LGA1851 (Intel). 10th gen chips like the i5-10400 and i7-10700 go on LGA1200 boards such as the H510 (MSI).
The same socket doesn't always mean a match. The 6th gen i5-6500 and the 9th gen i5-9400F are both LGA1151 (Intel), but MSI's H310M PRO-VDH board takes only 8th and 9th gen chips (MSI). The 3rd gen i3-3220 uses the older LGA1155 socket and DDR3 memory (Intel). It and the i3-3240, from the same generation, suit a PC that already has a matching board. 2. Check for built-in graphics
A processor without built-in graphics needs a graphics card just to show a picture. Intel's F suffix means the chip needs a separate graphics card (Intel), so the i5-9400F needs one. AMD lists the Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 9 5900X as needing a graphics card too (AMD).
Other chips can run a screen on their own. AMD lists Radeon 740M graphics built into the Ryzen 5 8500G (AMD), and the i5-12400, which has no F, has Intel UHD Graphics 730 (Intel). That's fine for office work, school and video. For gaming, add a card from graphics card price in Nepal.
3. Match the cores to the work
For office work, school and browsing, a Core i3, a Pentium or a Ryzen 5 with built-in graphics such as the 8500G is plenty. For a gaming PC, six cores is the usual choice: the i5-12400 and Ryzen 5 5600X both have 6 cores and 12 threads (AMD).
More cores pay off in video editing, 3D rendering and heavy multitasking. The Ryzen 9 5900X has 12 cores (AMD), the Ryzen 9 9950X has 16 (AMD), and the Core Ultra 9 285K has 24, made up of 8 performance and 16 efficient cores (Intel).
4. Know what K means
Intel's K suffix means the chip is unlocked for overclocking (Intel), as on the i5-12600K, i9-12900K and Core Ultra 7 265K. To overclock one you need a Z-series board. Intel lists processor overclocking on the Z790 chipset (Intel), while B760 supports memory overclocking only (Intel). If you don't plan to overclock, a non-K chip on a B-series or H-series board is the simpler choice.
5. Plan for the cooler and the power
Some boxed processors come with a cooler and some don't. AMD includes a Wraith Stealth cooler with the boxed Ryzen 5 5600X (AMD), but lists no cooler for the Ryzen 9 5900X (AMD) or 9950X and recommends a liquid cooler for both (AMD). If your processor has no cooler, see cooling fan price in Nepal.
The power rating tells you how much heat the cooler has to move and adds to what the power supply must deliver. The i5-12400 has a 65 W base power (Intel), the Ryzen 9 9950X is rated at 170 W (AMD), and the Core Ultra 9 285K has a 125 W base power but can draw up to 250 W in turbo (Intel).

Which processor is good for gaming?
A 6-core chip such as the Ryzen 5 5600X or Intel Core i5-12400 suits most gaming PCs, paired with a graphics card. In most games the graphics card makes the bigger difference to frame rates.
Do I need a graphics card with my processor?
Only if the processor has no built-in graphics, or if you want to play games. Intel models with F in the name, such as the i5-9400F, and AMD models like the Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 9 5900X need a graphics card to show a picture.
Will this processor fit my motherboard?
Check the socket first, then the generation. A Ryzen 5 5600X needs an AM4 board, a Ryzen 9 9950X an AM5 board, and a Core i5-12400 an LGA1700 board. A board made before your processor came out may need a BIOS update first.
Does the processor come with a cooler?
It depends on the model. The boxed Ryzen 5 5600X has one; the Ryzen 9 5900X and 9950X don't, so budget for a cooler with those. Check the product page or call us before you order.
