Landline phone buying guide: telephone sets, PABX and IP phones
For a home, one good telephone set is usually all you need. An office with several desks needs a PABX to share its lines, and some offices now use IP phones. This guide goes from the simplest to the biggest.
1. Basic, caller ID or cordless telephone set
A basic corded set such as the BEETEL B11 Telephone Set simply makes and takes calls, with nothing to set up. A caller ID set shows who is calling, like the BEETEL M55N Caller-ID Telephone Set, the Microtel MCT-111CID or the Excelltel PH208. The number only shows if your line sends caller ID, so check with your telephone provider.
The Panasonic KX-TG5776S is cordless, so you can carry the handset around the house. Its base station plugs into the mains, so it stops in a power cut unless the base is on a UPS or inverter.
2. A PABX for an office
A PABX connects a few outside lines to many extensions. Staff can call each other for free, pass calls between desks, and share the outside lines. To choose one, count the outside lines you have and the extensions you need, then leave room for a few more.
The Excelltel 2-8 Mini PABX is the small one, for a shop or small office. 3. IP phones
An IP phone plugs into your network instead of a phone line, and works with an IP PBX or a SIP account from a provider. The Fanvil X3SP Colour Display IP Phone has 4 SIP lines, a 2.4-inch colour screen and two network ports, one for the network and one for a PC. Unlike the X3S, the X3SP supports PoE, so it can take its power from a PoE switch over the same cable (Fanvil).
4. No landline: use a SIM card
Where there's no landline, the GSM to Telephone Line Converter (XGPWT-1S) turns a mobile SIM into a phone line for a desk phone or a PABX. Its product page lists it for NTC, Ncell and SmartCell SIMs, with a built-in battery rated for 48 hours on standby and 2 to 3 hours of talk time.
5. Keep it running in a power cut

Which telephone set should I buy for home?
A corded caller ID set suits most homes, since it shows who is calling and has nothing to charge. If you want to walk around while you talk, choose a cordless phone, and plug its base into a UPS or inverter so it keeps working in power cuts.
What is a PABX, and do I need one?
A PABX shares a few outside lines among many extensions and lets staff call each other. You need one when more than two or three desks share the office lines. A single home line doesn't need one.
Can I use a SIM card instead of a landline?
Yes. A GSM to telephone line converter takes a mobile SIM and gives you a normal phone line, so you can plug in a desk phone or connect it to a PABX.
What do I need for an IP phone?
A network connection and an IP PBX or a SIP account to register it on. For a PoE model like the Fanvil X3SP, a PoE switch powers it over the network cable; otherwise you need its power adapter.
