Exide SMF battery buying guide: sizes and uses
Both Exide batteries here are sealed maintenance-free (SMF) 12V batteries. They never need water, but they're built for different jobs than a tall tubular inverter battery. 1. What SMF means
Exide describes its Powersafe Plus range as sealed, maintenance-free VRLA batteries (Exide). Its EP series data sheet says you never need to check or top up the electrolyte, and gives a life of 3 to 5 years in standby use. Exide lists uses such as UPS systems, telecom, fire alarm and security systems, and solar lanterns (Exide).
Home inverters aren't on that list. For an inverter that runs for hours through daily power cuts, a tall tubular battery is the usual choice.
2. 100Ah or 26Ah
The Exide Powersafe SMF 100AH/12V (EP100AH) is the bigger block, for a UPS or other backup system that needs a longer runtime. The Exide SMF Battery 26AH/12V (EP26-12) is a small block for loads such as a security system or an alarm panel.
Exide rates these batteries at the 20-hour rate. Its data sheet gives the EP 26-12 as 26Ah over 20 hours but 24Ah over 10 hours, and the 100Ah EP 100-12 as 91Ah over 10 hours. Drain a battery faster and you get less than the label. Exide also recommends charging at 5 to 35°C and says life shortens as temperature rises (Exide), so keep it out of the sun and away from heat.

Do Exide SMF batteries need water?
No. Exide says you never need to check the electrolyte or top it up for the life of the battery.
How long does an Exide SMF battery last?
Exide's data sheet gives 3 to 5 years in standby use, such as in a UPS, and 200 to 250 or more full discharges if the battery is cycled hard. Heat shortens that, so keep it in a cool, airy spot.
Where are your 150Ah and 200Ah inverter batteries?
