Luminous vs Sukam Inverter: Which Brand to Buy in Nepal
The Luminous vs Sukam inverter choice at 900VA: the Su-Kam Falcon is pure sine wave and costs Rs 200 more than the square-wave Eco Watt Neo 1050.

Luminous vs Sukam Inverter: Which Brand to Buy in Nepal

Short answer: In the Luminous vs Sukam inverter choice, check the waveform before the brand. The Luminous Eco Watt Neo 1050 is a 900VA square-wave inverter built for lights and fans. Su-Kam's Falcon 900VA is pure sine wave and costs only Rs 200 more at our prices, so it's the better buy for fans, a TV or a fridge.

Who makes Luminous, Su-Kam and Su-Vastika inverters?

All three are Indian brands, and the names often get mixed up. Who stands behind each one matters, because that company honours the warranty and makes the spares.

BrandCompany behind itWhat to know
LuminousLuminous Power Technologies, Gurgaon, India, owned by Schneider ElectricFounded in 1988. Schneider Electric bought 74% in 2011 and, according to Business India, the remaining 26% in 2017.
Su-KamSu-Kam Power Systems Ltd, now under new managementFounded by Kunwer Sachdev, who dates the inverter brand to 1998. Admitted to insolvency in April 2018, with a liquidation order in April 2019. The brand was later sold.
Su-VastikaA separate company based in IndiaStarted in 2019. Khushboo Sachdev, Kunwer Sachdev's wife, is named as founder. Makes home UPS units, lithium (LiFePO4) storage and solar products.

The Su-Kam insolvency dates come from the IBBI record for Su-Kam Power Systems. Su-Kam's founder says on his own website that the brand was sold during the COVID period. The current Su-Kam website, run by a new management team, still lists the Falcon and Falcon+ ranges.

Luminous lists Nepal in its footprint of 41+ countries. Our take: Luminous has the strongest company behind it of the three. Su-Kam's Falcon range still has solid specs, but the company has been through a full reset, so ask whoever sells you one how warranty claims are handled in Nepal.

Luminous Eco Watt Neo 1050: what you actually get

The Eco Watt Neo 1050 is Luminous's budget home inverter, and the 1050 in its name is a model number, not the rating. On its official product page, Luminous rates it at 900VA with a maximum load of 756W.

The rest of the range follows the same pattern: Luminous lists the Neo 700 at 600VA, the Neo 800 at 700VA and the Neo 900 at 800VA. Compare any inverter by the VA and watt figures on its spec sheet, never by the number on the box.

SpecificationLuminous Eco Watt Neo 1050
Capacity900VA
Maximum load756W
Output waveformSquare wave (Luminous calls it modified square wave technology)
BatteryOne 12V battery
Battery typesFlat, tubular and local batteries
Weight9.3kg
Warranty (Luminous India listing)36 months

Square wave is the catch. Luminous's own sine wave vs square wave guide calls square-wave output safe only for simple lights and fans, and says it makes fan motors hum. So treat the Eco Watt Neo 1050 as a lights-and-fans inverter, not one for a fridge or a computer.

Want a Luminous inverter with clean output? Luminous's product page lists the Eco Volt Neo 750 (650VA) as pure sine wave, though one of its listing pages calls the Eco Volt Neo square wave, so check the spec sheet before you buy. We don't list it at the moment.

Our price for the Eco Watt Neo 1050 is Rs 10,800 (call to order), or see Luminous inverter prices in our shop.

Su-Kam Falcon, Falcon Plus and Frendy: which Sukam inverter is which?

Su-Kam (often typed Sukam) splits its home range by waveform. Its current website lists the Falcon and Falcon+ as pure sine wave, and the Shark and Torque models as square wave. Here's how the models we sell line up:

  • Falcon 900VA/12V: Su-Kam's Falcon 900/12V page lists pure sine wave output, load start-up at 300% of rated capacity, six-stage charging, a low-battery trip and a charger that works with SMF, flooded and tubular batteries.
  • Falcon Plus 900VA/12V and 1600VA/24V: Su-Kam sells the Falcon+ series as pure sine wave UPS units for sensitive appliances, though its current Falcon+ page starts at 1250/12V and doesn't show these two models. The 1600VA model runs on 24V, so it needs two 12V batteries.
  • Frendy 400VA/12V: the entry model. Su-Kam's current website doesn't list it, so there's no official spec sheet to point to; our listing shows it as square wave.
  • 1100VA/12V Solar Hybrid: Su-Kam's website now lists its solar hybrids as Brainy+ models from 1250/12V up, with no 1100VA unit. Ask us for the charge controller type and panel limit before you buy panels.

We couldn't find an official page setting out what the Plus adds over the plain Falcon at 900VA. Both are pure sine wave, and the Plus costs Rs 800 more at our prices, so ask us to compare them.

Pure sine wave vs square wave: does it matter for fans, fridges and computers?

Yes, more than the brand does. A pure sine wave inverter gives smooth, clean output, while a square-wave unit delivers choppy, abrupt waves. That's cheaper to build, but hard on anything with a motor or a microchip.

Here's what Luminous and Genus, both inverter makers, say in their own guides:

  • Fans: square wave makes fan motors hum loudly.
  • Fridges and washing machines: rough output builds up extra heat that strains motors and shortens their life.
  • Laptops, smart TVs and computers: square wave can harm parts with microprocessors, and Luminous says it can make laptops and smart TVs overheat or show lines on the screen.
  • Efficiency: square wave loses more energy than sine wave.
  • Price: sine wave units cost more, as Luminous itself says.

Our rule is simple. Square wave is acceptable if the inverter will only run lights and perhaps a fan you can live with humming. For a fridge, a TV, a desktop or anything you'd hate to replace, buy pure sine wave; at 900VA in our shop the gap is Rs 200.

A desktop PC needs more than a clean waveform. Our UPS vs inverter guide explains when a computer UPS makes more sense, and our guide to protecting a computer from power surges covers the rest.

How to size your inverter and battery: the honest maths

Our how to choose an inverter guide covers the basics. Here we run the numbers for two example homes, because it's easy to overspend on the inverter and underspend on the battery.

  1. Add up running watts from the labels of everything you want on during a power cut.
  2. Divide by 0.8 to get VA. Luminous uses 0.8 as its example but warns it isn't fixed, so check the watt rating too: it rates the Eco Watt Neo at 756W from 900VA.
  3. Add 20 to 25% if a fridge or water pump is on the list, for the extra power its motor draws at start-up. Luminous's inverter capacity guide notes that some sizing guides use this margin, but check the maker's recommended load too.
  4. Work out backup time: battery Ah × battery volts × 0.8 ÷ load in watts. The 0.8 covers inverter losses; Tata Green Battery puts inverter efficiency at 80 to 90%.
HomeLoadVA neededBackup, one 150Ah 12V batteryBackup, one 230Ah 12V battery
Fans, lights and WiFi2 fans at 75W + 60W of lights + 20W router = 230W230 ÷ 0.8 = about 290VAAbout 6 hoursAbout 9½ hours
Add a fridge and a TV230W + 150W fridge + 100W TV = 480W480 ÷ 0.8 = 600VA, plus 25% = 750VAAbout 3 hoursAbout 4½ hours

Backup = battery Ah × 12V × 0.8 ÷ load. The fan and router wattages are the example figures Livguard uses; the light, fridge and TV figures are examples only. Use the numbers on your own labels.

Does a bigger inverter give more backup time?

No, and this is where the maths saves you money:

  • Backup comes from the battery, not the inverter. VA isn't in the formula, so a bigger inverter on the same battery doesn't buy you more hours.
  • The 230Ah battery gives about 50% more backup than a 150Ah one on the same load.
  • On 24V, two batteries double the stored energy. Two 150Ah batteries on the Falcon Plus 1600VA give 150 × 24 × 0.8 = 2,880Wh, about 6 hours at 480W.

Treat these as best-case figures for a new battery. Inverters cut off at low battery to protect it, and batteries hold less as they age. Some brand guides use 0.95 instead of 0.8, which is why their backup figures look rosier.

Tubular or SMF? Our inverter battery guide compares them, and current prices are in our inverter battery category.

Battery Ah sets your backup time; the inverter's VA sets how much you can run.

Luminous vs Sukam inverter: which should you buy?

There's no single best inverter brand in Nepal, only the best unit for your load and budget. Here's how we'd choose from what we sell:

  1. Fans, lights and WiFi: the Su-Kam Falcon 900VA at Rs 11,000. It's pure sine wave, so fans run without the square-wave hum, and 900VA leaves room to add a TV later.
  2. Tight budget, lights first: the Su-Kam Frendy 400VA at Rs 7,500 covers about 320W at a 0.8 power factor. Expect fans to hum on square wave. If you only need WiFi, our router UPS guide shows a simpler fix.
  3. You want Luminous: the Eco Watt Neo 1050 at Rs 10,800, for lights and fans only. You get the brand with Schneider Electric behind it.
  4. A fridge, a desktop or a bigger house: the Su-Kam Falcon Plus 1600VA/24V at Rs 17,900, on two 12V batteries for longer backup.
  5. Small solar setup: the Su-Kam 1100VA Solar Hybrid at Rs 12,900, once you've confirmed its charge controller and panel limit with us. Read our solar panel price guide before you plan panels.
  6. Big house on one system: the Su-Vastika Falcon Plus 4KVA/48V at Rs 42,000 works out to roughly 3,200W at a 0.8 power factor, on four 12V batteries.

Warranty, service and EMI in Nepal

Luminous's Indian listing gives the Eco Watt Neo 1050 a 36-month warranty, while Su-Kam's product pages don't state warranty periods at all. Terms in Nepal can differ from Indian ones, so ask us what applies to the exact unit before you pay, and keep your VAT bill.

The battery carries its own warranty, separate from the inverter, so check both when you buy a set.

You can spread the cost with EMI: a 20% down payment and 10% interest on inverters and batteries, through Nabil Bank or Machhapuchchhre Bank credit cards.

Quick verdict: Judge inverters by VA, watts and waveform, not the model number: the Eco Watt Neo 1050 is a 900VA unit. For a home that runs fans, a TV or a fridge, the pure sine wave Su-Kam Falcon 900VA (Rs 11,000) beats the square-wave Luminous Eco Watt Neo 1050 (Rs 10,800). For longer backup, spend on battery Ah, not inverter VA.

Frequently asked questions

Is Luminous or Su-Kam better?

Neither brand wins on every model, so compare the exact units. At our prices, the Su-Kam Falcon 900VA (pure sine wave) costs Rs 200 more than the Luminous Eco Watt Neo 1050 (900VA, square wave). Luminous has the stronger company behind it as a Schneider Electric brand.

Is the Luminous Eco Watt Neo 1050 pure sine wave?

No. Luminous lists it as a square wave inverter, rated 900VA with a 756W maximum load, running on one 12V battery. Luminous sells separate pure sine wave models, such as the Eco Volt Neo 750 and the Power Sine range, so check the spec sheet of the exact model.

Is Su-Kam still in business?

Yes, under new management. The original Su-Kam Power Systems was admitted to insolvency in April 2018 and a liquidation order followed in April 2019. The brand was later sold, and its website still lists the Falcon and Falcon+ inverters.

Are Su-Kam and Su-Vastika the same company?

No. Su-Vastika is a separate company based in India, started in 2019, with Khushboo Sachdev, wife of Su-Kam founder Kunwer Sachdev, named as founder. It makes home UPS units, lithium storage and solar products.

How long will a 900VA inverter run on a 150Ah battery?

It depends on the load, not the VA rating. Fans, lights and WiFi drawing 230W give roughly 6 hours on a new 150Ah 12V battery (150 × 12 × 0.8 ÷ 230). Add a fridge and TV for 480W and expect about 3 hours.
