WiFi router buying guide: connection, Wi-Fi standard and coverage

Three things decide which WiFi router you need: how your internet reaches the house, how fast your plan is, and how much space the Wi-Fi has to cover.

1. Start with how your internet comes in

With fiber internet, your provider fits a small box called an ONT (or ONU) where the fiber ends, and many of these boxes have Wi-Fi built in. A router you buy here plugs into one of its LAN ports with a network cable. In Nepal this is often called a secondary router.

Internet over a telephone line (ADSL) needs an ADSL modem router such as the TP-Link TD-W8961N, which has an RJ11 phone-line port (TP-Link). For internet from a SIM card, see pocket WiFi price in Nepal. The Allied GEPON ONU and Anatel XPON fiber routers on this page replace the provider's box itself, so ask your provider first: a new ONT usually has to be set up on their side before it works.

2. Know how the router logs in

The router's WAN (internet) port connects to the provider's box, and in the router's settings you pick one of three connection types. If the provider's box already logs in to the internet, use dynamic IP (DHCP). If they put their box in bridge mode, your router logs in itself with the PPPoE username and password they give you. Some business lines use a static IP instead.

Two routers one after the other work fine in most homes. If you'd rather have only one router doing the work, ask your provider to put their box in bridge mode, or set your router to access point mode if it has one.

3. Choose the Wi-Fi standard: Wi-Fi 4, 5 or 6

The Wi-Fi Alliance calls 802.11n Wi-Fi 4, 802.11ac Wi-Fi 5 and 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 (Wi-Fi Alliance). Wi-Fi 6 is built to cope better when many phones, TVs and laptops are online at once (Wi-Fi Alliance), and your devices need Wi-Fi 6 too to get the full benefit.

The AC or AX number in a router's name is roughly the top speeds of its two bands added together. Ruijie rates the AC1300 Ruijie Reyee RG-EW1300G at 400 Mbps on 2.4 GHz plus 867 Mbps on 5 GHz (Ruijie). The Wi-Fi 6 RG-EW3000GX is rated at 573 Mbps plus 2402 Mbps (Ruijie). These are link rates: real speeds are lower, and your internet never runs faster than your plan.

4. Single band or dual band

A single-band router uses only 2.4 GHz, which reaches further through walls but is slower and more crowded. A dual-band router adds 5 GHz, which is faster closer to the router. The Ruijie Reyee RG-EW300 PRO is 2.4 GHz only, and Ruijie recommends it for 8 devices at a time (Ruijie). The dual-band RG-EW3200GX PRO is recommended for 12 on 2.4 GHz and 48 on 5 GHz (Ruijie).

When a shop or a router name says "5G", it nearly always means this 5 GHz band, not 5G mobile internet.

5. Check the port speed if your plan is over 100 Mbps

A router with 10/100 ports holds everything coming through its WAN port to 100 Mbps, however fast its Wi-Fi is. The TP-Link TD-W8961N, for example, has 10/100 ports (TP-Link). On a faster plan, look for "Gigabit" in the name: the RG-EW1300G and RG-EW3200GX PRO both have gigabit ports (Ruijie). You can compare plans in our internet plans post.

6. Cover the whole house: mesh, extender or access point

Concrete walls and extra floors cut Wi-Fi quickly. A mesh system joins two or more units into one network with one name and password. The RG-EW1300G, RG-EW3000GX and RG-EW3200GX PRO all support Reyee Mesh 3.0, and Ruijie says Reyee Mesh links all of its Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 home routers (Ruijie). The RG-EW1200R extender joins a Reyee mesh router, and also has repeater and AP modes for other routers (Ruijie).

For offices and shops, a ceiling access point like the RG-RAP2260(G) takes a network cable from the router and runs on PoE or a 12 V adapter (Ruijie). To link two buildings, the RG-EST350 V2 wireless bridge pair is rated for 5 km, and Ruijie lists 150 Mbps at that distance (Ruijie).

WiFi router FAQ

What is a secondary router?

It's your own WiFi router added behind the box your internet provider installed. Run a network cable from a LAN port on the provider's box to the router's WAN port, then set the router to dynamic IP, or to PPPoE if the provider has put their box in bridge mode. It's the usual fix when the provider's Wi-Fi doesn't reach every room.

Will my own router work with WorldLink, Vianet or NT fiber?

Any WiFi router with an Ethernet WAN port can sit behind your provider's fiber box. Ask the provider whether to use dynamic IP or PPPoE, and for the PPPoE username and password if you need them. Replacing the provider's ONT itself is different, so check with them first.

Is a 5G router the same as 5G mobile internet?

No. In router names, 5G usually means the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band on a dual-band router. It works with your fiber or ADSL line, not with a 5G SIM.

Should I buy a Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 router?

Wi-Fi 5 is fine for a small flat with a few devices. Choose Wi-Fi 6 if lots of devices connect at once or your phones and laptops already have Wi-Fi 6. Either way, get gigabit ports if your plan is over 100 Mbps.

How do I keep the Wi-Fi running in a power cut?

A mini DC router UPS such as the Nexgen Mini DC Router UPS NX305 (10400mAh) runs the router from its battery. Match its output to the voltage on your router's adapter, and remember the provider's fiber box needs power too. Our router UPS guide explains more.

Which WiFi router brands do you sell?

Ruijie Reyee, TP-Link, D-Link, Netis, MikroTik, Allied and Anatel, plus Nexgen router UPS. Every price on this page is our current website price.
