Laptop charger buying guide: voltage, plug and wattage
The safest replacement laptop charger, or adapter, copies the one your laptop came with. Its label and plug tell you the three things to match.
1. Match the output voltage
Find the OUTPUT line on the old adapter's label and buy one with the same voltage. The Dell Laptop Adapter 19.5V/3.34A/65W (Big Pin) gives 19.5V, and the Lenovo Laptop Adapter 20V 3.25A (Big Pin) gives 20V.
2. Match the plug
A plug that looks close may not fit, or may sit loose and not charge. Even one maker uses several: Lenovo makes adapters with a round tip, a slim tip and a USB-C tip (Lenovo). Both adapters here are Big Pin, the round barrel type, so hold the plug up to your old one or bring the old charger to the store.
If your adapter works and only the mains cord between the wall and the brick is damaged, the Laptop Power Cable 2 Pin (Heavy) replaces that part for adapters with a two-pin socket.
3. Match the wattage, or go higher
Watts are volts times amps. 19.5V × 3.34A and 20V × 3.25A both come to about 65 W. If your laptop came with a 90W or bigger adapter, as many gaming laptops do, a 65W one is too small. Dell says a low-wattage adapter can bring up a warning at startup, slow the computer down and stop the battery from charging (Dell). An adapter with the same voltage and plug and a higher wattage is fine.

How do I find the right charger for my laptop?

Can I use a higher-wattage charger on my laptop?
Yes, as long as the voltage and plug match; the laptop only takes the power it needs. A lower-wattage charger is the one to avoid, because the battery may charge slowly or not at all.
Will the Lenovo 20V Big Pin charger fit my Lenovo laptop?
Only if your laptop has the round socket. Many Lenovo laptops use the slim tip or USB-C instead, so check the socket on the laptop or the plug on your old adapter.
