12th Gen Intel Core laptop buying guide: hybrid cores, U or H, and 13th Gen
12th Gen Intel Core chips reached laptops in early 2022, and Intel lists the i5-1235U as a first-quarter 2022 launch (Intel). They still make sense for students, office work and light gaming, as long as you know which chip you're getting. For the basics, see the Intel laptop buying guide on Intel laptop price in Nepal.
1. What changed: Performance-cores and Efficient-cores
12th Gen was the first Intel Core generation with a hybrid design (Intel). It mixes Performance-cores for heavy work with smaller Efficient-cores for lighter and background tasks, and that raised core counts a lot. The 11th Gen i7-11800H has 8 cores and 16 threads (Intel). The 12th Gen i7-12700H jumps to 14 cores (6 Performance, 8 Efficient) and 20 threads (Intel). Even a slim chip like the i5-1235U in the ASUS Vivobook X1402ZA has 10 cores.
12th Gen U chips like the i5-1235U also support DDR5 memory as well as DDR4 (Intel). Which type a laptop uses is the maker's choice, so check the spec sheet before you buy RAM for an upgrade.
2. Know the 12th Gen chips on this page
The U chips here have a 15 W base power, for thin laptops. The i3-1215U has 6 cores (Intel), and the i5-1235U and i7-1255U both have 10 (Intel). That means a 12th Gen i7 U chip has the same core count as the i5, with a higher top speed of 4.7 GHz against 4.4 GHz.
The H chips here have a 45 W base power. The i5-12450H has 8 cores (Intel), the i5-12500H 12 (Intel), the i7-12650H 10 (Intel) and the i7-12700H 14. The i7-12650H has fewer cores than the i5-12500H, but 6 Performance-cores against 4. For gaming, the ASUS TUF F15 (FX507ZC4) pairs the i5-12500H with an RTX 3050.
3. 12th Gen or 13th Gen
13th Gen kept the same hybrid layout for most U and H chips and mostly raised clock speeds. The i5-1235U and the 13th Gen i5-1335U both have 10 cores, and the newer chip tops out at 4.6 GHz against 4.4 GHz (Intel). So a 12th Gen laptop with more RAM or a better screen can be the better buy. 12th Gen Intel Core laptop FAQ
Is a 12th Gen Intel laptop still a good buy?
Yes. 13th Gen U and H chips mostly added clock speed over 12th Gen, so the gap is small, and RAM, screen and graphics often matter more than the generation.
What is the difference between 12th Gen U and H processors?
U chips such as the i5-1235U have a 15 W base power and go in thin, light laptops. H chips such as the i5-12500H have a 45 W base power and 4 Performance-cores against 2, so they suit gaming and heavy work.
