What to check before buying a used phone
- Bill and owner: ask for the original bill and check that the seller's name matches.
- IMEI: dial *#06# (or open Settings > General > About on an iPhone), match it to the bill and box, and check it on NTA's MDMS portal, mdms.nta.gov.np (PriceNepal). NTA's MDMS system is meant to stop illegally imported phones (The Himalayan Times).
- Warranty: for an iPhone, enter the serial number on checkcoverage.apple.com.
- Battery health: on an iPhone, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Apple says iPhone 14 and older batteries are designed to keep 80% of their capacity at 500 complete charge cycles, and iPhone 15 models at 1,000 cycles.
- Parts history: on iOS 15.2 or later, Settings > General > About shows replaced parts; "Unknown Part" means a non-Apple part.
- Account lock: the seller must sign out of their Apple ID (Activation Lock) or Google account in front of you, or you may not be able to set the phone up.
- Samsung phones: look for the IMS or Him Electronics hologram on the box for an official unit (Nepali Telecom).
- Test everything: screen (look for burn-in on a plain colour), Face ID or fingerprint, cameras, speakers, microphone, charging port, Wi-Fi and calls. Ask for a few days to test it.
