Extension Cord or Surge Protector? How to Choose a Multiplug in Nepal
Updated 29 October 2026. Prices are Quality Computer’s website prices that day. Specifications are taken from the makers’ details on our product listings.
Short answer: An ordinary extension cord only gives you more sockets; a surge protector also absorbs voltage spikes, and its joule rating shows how much it can take. Use a surge protector for a computer, TV or router. Neither keeps anything running in a power cut; for that you need a UPS. Every multiplug with today's price is on our multiplug price in Nepal page.

Extension cord or surge protector?
Both give you more sockets from one wall point. The surge protectors also list a surge rating in joules and a maximum spike current in amps. Huntkey describes its rating as surge protection “safeguarding connected devices from voltage spikes”. The plain extension cords list overload breakers or fuses instead, with no joule rating.

Neither type has a battery, so a multiplug will not keep your computer running in a power cut. For backup power you need a UPS; see also UPS vs inverter.
Why surge protection matters in Nepal
Unstable power is a common complaint. In June 2026 the Kathmandu Post reported from Bardiya that “constant fluctuations in the power supply have also raised concerns over damage to refrigerators, water pumps and other electrical equipment.” In August 2026 OnlineKhabar reported that dedicated power feeders were being built and upgraded “to reduce voltage fluctuations”.
Our guide on how to protect your computer from power surges and voltage fluctuations explains when you need a UPS, an online UPS or a voltage stabiliser.
Before you buy

Read the limits on the box. The Micro MPS A-151 listing, for example, says it “can only be used in dry places” and that the load should not exceed the product’s specified technical parameters.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I see today's multiplug prices?
Every multiplug we stock is listed with today's price on our multiplug price in Nepal page.
Which multiplug has the highest surge rating?
The Honeywell 6 Socket Surge Protector Platinum, listed at 918 joules and 36,000A.
Is a multiplug the same as a surge protector?
Not always. A surge protector lists a surge rating in joules. Plain extension cords give extra sockets and overload protection but list no joule rating.
Will a surge protector keep my computer on during a power cut?
No. A multiplug has no battery. A UPS gives backup power during a cut.
Which multiplugs have USB charging?
The Micro MPS-1105US (2.4A USB) and the Honeywell 5 Socket + 2 USB Platinum.
