Which DJI drone should you buy?
- First drone, selfies and follow-me video: the Neo 2 (Rs 51,350) is DJI’s smallest and cheapest here. It has no card slot, so footage goes to its 49 GB of built-in storage.
- Best value for travel photos: the Lito 1 (Rs 74,100) costs a little less than the Mini 4K (Rs 77,400) and has a newer 48MP camera, 4K video and obstacle sensing in every direction.
- Best camera under 250 g: the Mini 5 Pro (from Rs 125,500) has a 1-inch, 50MP sensor and up to 36 minutes of flight on the standard battery.
- For serious photo and video work: the Air 3S (from Rs 221,050) or Mavic 4 Pro (from Rs 330,550). Both weigh more than 250 g, so they fall in CAAN’s Category B.
- For FPV flying: the Avata 2 (from Rs 77,650).

Drone rules in Nepal: registration and permits
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) says anyone who operates a drone in Nepal must register it. Registration on its own does not let you fly: you also need a valid flight permit. CAAN groups drones by weight:
| CAAN category | Takeoff weight | Risk level |
|---|---|---|
| Category A | Under 250 g | Very low risk |
| Category B | 250 g to 2 kg | Low risk |
| Category C | 2 kg to 25 kg | Regulated low risk (insurance needed) |
| Category D | Above 25 kg | Regulated high risk (insurance needed) |

How to register a drone with CAAN
CAAN’s checklist for Nepali owners asks for:
- Your photo, and your citizenship certificate, passport or company registration
- A photo of the drone showing its model and serial number
- A Purpose of Operation and Commitment Letter (Form RPA/002)
- The manufacturer’s specifications
- The seller’s VAT bill or customs clearance papers. The drone needs CE marking or type approval.
- The fee: USD 50 plus 13% VAT
Drones in Categories C and D also need insurance and a physical check at CAAN.
Where and how high you can fly
CAAN’s rules say to fly within sight, at or below 100 m (328 ft) above the ground, and never within 5 km of an airport, over crowds, or in prohibited or restricted areas. You must also follow Home Ministry directives.
The Home Ministry’s drone procedure, as reported in 2019, bans flights within 5 km of airports and along the international border, and at Maitighar Mandala, Swoyambhunath, Pashupatinath, Bouddhanath, Budhanilkantha, the Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan Durbar Squares, other religious and archaeological sites, Singha Durbar and the residences of the President, Vice President and Prime Minister. It also keeps drones about 1,000 m from Nepali Army offices and 500 m from other security agencies.
Under that procedure, flights up to 200 ft need permission from the district administration office and higher flights need Home Ministry permission. Permission lasts three months and can be renewed for three more. Flying at 50 ft or lower for recreational, ceremonial, cultural or religious purposes needs no permission. In October 2022 the ministry said drones up to 2 kg need district administration office permission and heavier drones need Home Ministry permission. The flight permit is reported to be free and to take about three days, starting with a letter from your municipality, then a district administration recommendation and police security clearance before it goes to CAAN.
Trekking with a drone? National parks need their own permission. In 2019 Sagarmatha National Park seized six drones from trekkers flying without it, and flying in the Everest region was reported to cost USD 1,500.
Break the rules and you can face action under the Civil Aviation Authority Act 1996 and the Electronic Transactions Act 2008, and your drone can be confiscated. We found no change to these rules in 2025 or 2026, but check with CAAN and your district administration office before you fly.

Where to buy DJI drones in Nepal
IMS Group, based at KB Plaza in Kamaladi, Kathmandu, says it is the national distributor of DJI drones in Nepal. DJI Nepal (dji-nepal.com), run by Oliz Store, calls itself an authorised DJI distributor. We could not find a Nepal listing on DJI’s own where-to-buy pages. Wherever you buy, get a VAT bill: you need it, or customs papers, to register the drone with CAAN.
